Graduate Fellowships for Technology-Based Healthcare

Advance translational research at the interface of science, engineering, and medicine

The graduate fellowship program supports collaborative, translational research while creating a pathway for Illinois graduate students to investigate post-graduation employment opportunities at Mayo Clinic.

Program highlights

The Technology-Based Healthcare Fellowship program provides a unique opportunity for Illinois graduate students to work collaboratively with Mayo Clinic researchers and clinicians on a translational research project aimed at developing new technologies and clinical tools. To get the most from the experience, fellows are encouraged to spend one year at Illinois and one year at Mayo Clinic.

Program details

The fellowship provides two years of support, one year funded by Mayo Clinic and the other year funded by Illinois. During the fellowship period, fellows must spend at least 12 months in residence at the Mayo Clinic campus in Rochester, Minnesota, where the fellow will work closely with a Mayo Clinic advisor.

Eligibility & financial support

Applicants must be graduate students currently enrolled at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign with at least two years remaining in their graduate program. Proposed research projects must be relevant to the goals of the Mayo Clinic & Illinois Alliance.

  • $40,000 annual stipend
  • Coverage of tuition expenses as well as the service fee, health service fee, transportation fee, AFMFA fee, library fee, and the international student fee (if assessed), along with partial payment of the graduate student health insurance fee.

Current fellows

Yurui Cao

Yurui is a doctoral student in electrical and computer engineering. Yurui is working with Illinois advisor Ravishankar (Ravi) K. Iyer and Mayo Clinic advisor Gregory Worrel to develop machine learning tools for understanding the mechanisms underlying brain stimulation and its interaction with epilepsy and behavior.

Anirudh Choudhary

Anirudh is a doctoral student in electrical and computer engineering. Anirudh is working with Illinois advisor Ravishankar (Ravi) K. Iyer and Mayo Clinic advisor Aaron Mangold, M.D. to help doctors diagnose squamous cell cancer and predict the spread of tumors.

Neeraj Wagh

Neeraj is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Bioengineering. Neeraj is working with Illinois advisor Yogatheesan Varatharajah and Mayo Clinic advisor Gregory Worrell using machine learning methods to predict disease states and treatment response in epilepsy, stroke, and depression patients.

Ananthan Nambiar

Ananthan is a doctoral student in the Bioengineering. Ananthan is working with Illinois advisors Sergei Maslov and Sharon Donovan and Mayo Clinic advisors Konstantinos Lazaridis and Arjun Athreya. Ananthan will be using deep learning to predict non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) susceptibility from whole exome sequencing data.

Muhammad Fayyaz

Muhammad is pursuing a doctorate in the Department of Bioengineering. Muhammad is working with Illinois advisor Andrew Smith and Mayo Clinic advisor Andres Acosta to conduct research focused on obesity therapeutics in association with Type 2 diabetes.

Dr. Arjun Athreya

Dr. Arjun Athreya
Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Pharmacology, Mayo Clinic

“Shoulder-to-shoulder work with clinicians and basic science faculty is essential to innovating the healthcare technology of the future. To that end, the annual travel fund of $5,000 was essential in allowing for travel and boarding expenses to Mayo Clinic throughout the year for sustained collaborations.”
