Affiliates

Faculty, researchers, and medical professionals are invited to formalize their collaboration with the Mayo Clinic & Illinois Alliance through affiliation. This unpaid appointment, sponsored by the Interdisciplinary Health Sciences Institute (IHSI) at Illinois, offers increased opportunities to engage with and benefit from IHSI staff, other affiliates, partners, and program faculty and students.

Affiliate appointment and benefits

Affiliation offers numerous benefits. Affiliates are expected to remain in contact with the IHSI leadership team to identify and review appropriate opportunities for mutually beneficial interactions between the institute and the affiliate. 

  • Increased access to IHSI services and partners
  • Increased networks through the Mayo Clinic & Illinois Alliance
  • Opportunity to apply for funding for research fellows, undergraduate and graduate students, etc.
  • Leadership and decision-making roles on committees
  • Increased visibility of research, programs, events, publications, and awarded grants through IHSI and Alliance communications outlets (newsletters, social media, website, etc.)
  • Participation in new Alliance initiatives and IHSI-led campus-wide initiatives focused on an interdisciplinary research and education model in health sciences, technology, and innovation

Contact Deborah Miller, IHSI Assistant Director for Clinical Partnerships and Mayo Clinic & Illinois Alliance Program Manager, with questions about the affiliate program. 

  1. Complete the IHSI Affiliate Program Application. Applicants must describe the mutual benefits of the collaborative affiliation, select at least two contributions to IHSI, and upload a copy of their CV.
  2. The IHSI leadership team will review all applications.
  3. If approved, applicants will receive a written offer for an affiliate appointment. Upon written acceptance, the affiliate appointment will begin.

Potential collaborative contributions

  • Mentoring, training, and advising students and post-doctoral fellows participating in IHSI programs (including Alliance educational programs)
  • Participating in and helping to organize seminars and other educational functions
  • Serving on one or more institute committees including selection committees, strategic committees, event committees, and education and research committees
  • Elevating the visibility of IHSI, the Mayo Clinic & Illinois Alliance, and/or other institute priorities
  • Furthering connections and assisting with grant opportunities both with Illinois researchers and with external institutions
  • Contributing to collaborative IHSI- or Alliance-led publications, presentations, and outreach activities
  • Helping to build connections and fostering new collaborative projects and programs with local community groups and organizations, other academic institutions, medical and allied health organizations, industry, and government agencies

Terms and Conditions of IHSI Affiliate Appointments

  • IHSI affiliate appointments will be for a term of 3 years, reviewed annually, with the option to renew for subsequent 3-year terms.
  • Affiliate appointments do not guarantee office space, funding, or any other services provided by the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.   
  • Affiliate appointments are renewed every three years to permit termination if interests of either party change.
  • Affiliate appointments are renewable as many times as desired, pending continued contributions and mutual benefit.
  • The affiliate title does not entitle the holder to any formal notice of non-reappointment.
  • The affiliate or the IHSI leadership team may unilaterally terminate the appointment at any time, upon written notice.
