The Mayo Clinic & Illinois Alliance is pleased to introduce the latest recipient of the Graduate Fellowship for Technology-Based Healthcare

Huyen Nguyen
Huyen Nguyen, Mayo Clinic & Illinois Alliance Fellow for Technology-Based Healthcare

Huyen Nguyen is a doctoral student in the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering. She is working with advisor Minh N. Do at Illinois and advisor Chen Wang at Mayo Clinic on designing innovative tools for pathology and cytology image analysis that can aid in cancer screening and diagnosis.

The Project

Nguyen will work to integrate a CLIP (Contrastive Language-Image Pretraining) model-based system that combines pathomics, AI-analyzed quantitative image features extracted from pathology slides using advanced image processing and AI techniques, with pathology notes and other omics data modalities. This will automate and enhance the pathology workflow, reducing manual processes and integrating disparate data modalities to unlock the full translational potential of AI in medical diagnostics. The team aims to significantly enhance diagnostic accuracy and speed, leading to better patient management and outcomes.

Fellowship Opportunities

The Mayo Clinic & Illinois Alliance Technology-Based Healthcare Fellowship provides a unique opportunity for Illinois graduate students to work collaboratively with Mayo Clinic researchers and clinicians on a translational research project aimed at developing new technologies and clinical tools. To get the most from the experience, fellows are encouraged to spend one year at Illinois and one year at Mayo Clinic, creating a pathway for current Illinois graduate students to investigate post-graduation employment opportunities at Mayo Clinic.

Nguyen is the sixteenth fellow to participate in the program since its launch in 2016.
